Coping with depression by San Diego Psychologist Dr. Kathleen Durning

One in five people will face a bout of severe depression in their lifetime. That number increases in women to one in four. You may be depressed if, in addition to low mood or irritability over a period of weeks, you have:

  • Loss of interest in pleasurable activities
  • Poor appetite, or overeating
  • Insomnia, or hypersomnia
  • Bodily agitation, or sluggishness
  • Fatigue and loss of energy
  • Feelings of worthlessness and self-reproach
  • Diminished ability to think, concentrate, or make decisions
  • Preoccupation with fear of death, a wish to be dead, or actual plans to commit suicide
  • Feelings of hopelessness

Counseling is of great help to those who suffer from depression. My goal is to restore your sense of well-being and your interest in life, as you deal with the loss or pain that may be holding you back. You will learn new skills to control your thoughts and emotions, so that you can function successfully again in social, personal and work situations.
